More than a third of household haven’t switched their broadband provider in four years or longer, wasting £500million collectively across the UK, according to new research.
The average cost of a broadband and home phone bundle is £62 a year – less than half the price of four years ago when the average cost was £132 annually, according to research by comparison website broadbandchoices.co.uk.
Almost 40 per cent of households have not switched in four years, despite the dramatic fall in prices.

Switch: Broadbandchoices.co.uk says that nearly a third of people have not switched broadband supplier in the last four years - missing out on savings as prices have fallen to half the cost during this time.
Broadband and home phone customers can switch providers without paying a fee if they’re outside of a locked-in contract period – which usually last 12 to 18 months.
The research, which is based on 2,000 responses, also found that consumers main obstacle in switching is that they think it will be ‘complicated and difficult’.
Dominic Baliszewski, telecoms expert at broadbandchoices.co.uk, said: ‘A lot of customers are stuck on outdated packages and could get so much more for their money if they just switched.
'People are used to shopping around for energy, insurance or even petrol, but customers are still failing to regularly switch their broadband service, potentially pouring over £500 million down the drain each year.’
Despite regulation aimed at speeding up the process, customers are still sceptical about switching. Ofcom, the telecoms regulator, introduced new rules in 2007 to make it easier for customers to get their Migration Authorisation Code (MAC), allowing them to switch suppliers, free of charge.
Your existing provider must provide the MAC to you within five working days and it’s valid for a period of 30 days. You can then contact the new provider with the code to start the switching process which should take one to two weeks to complete.
In February last year Ofcom announced that it was carrying out a consultation in to the broadband switching process. It is looking to simplify the process even further as well as looking at technical problems that slow it down.
Ofcom is expected to make an announcement on the issue in the next couple of months.
GUIDE: HOW TO SWITCH BROADBAND AND PHONE SUPPLIERS
Compare the true cost of packages:
Use an Ofcom-approved site that details hidden costs like installation
charges, line rental and monthly prices after any special offer
discounts expire.
Check
your contract length: Read your current contract to be certain that it
has expired, allowing you to switch without any ‘early exit fees.’ Also
take note of the length of the new contract length you are signing up to
– some providers have 18 month terms rather than the standard 12
months.
Read customer
reviews: Customers make for
the harshest critics so look for comparison sites that publish customer
ratings – this will give you a realistic picture of the service the
provider offers.
Data limits: Think about your habits - Do you spend a
lot of time downloading content like films and games, or do you only
want to do a little light surfing and emailing? If the former, it is
worth choosing a package with a ‘truly unlimited’ download limit to
accommodate your activity and avoid excess download penalties.
Speed matters: Some providers will allow you to do a test on your line to see what speed you will have if you switch to them. It's important to choose a provider who can offer you a reliable and high enough speed. For example, consumers wanting to get TV service YouView are advised that they need at least a 3mb speed to stream content.
Consider fibre optic: More providers than ever before are now
offering fibre – but remember you will pay more for this service. Fibre
optic is best for busy households or gamers who are hungry for
bandwidth. Prices starting from under £10 per month.
Call costs: Look for things like inclusive mobile minutes and 0845
numbers on your home phone package as these can really bump up a monthly
bill. If they are not included in the monthly package cost, make sure
the per-minute call costs are clearly signposted to you before signing
up as they can be cleverly hidden away on provider sites.
Pay your line rental up front: Line rental is a ‘hidden cost’ of
broadband and in many cases is pricier than the package itself. Some
providers, like Sky and BT, offer a significant discount of around £50
to customers who pay for their line rental upfront so its worth doing if
you can afford it.
Get
your MAC code: Some switches need a MAC code (Migration Authorisation
Code), allowing you to switch broadband provider without any break in
your service by helping your new ‘gaining provider’ identify where your
line is. You can get this code by calling your ‘losing’ provider (the
provider you’re leaving) and asking for it – they are obliged to give it
to you within 5 days. (N.B. MAC codes are only used when switching some
ADSL services. They are not needed for cable broadband). If you don’t
feel comfortable battling with the provider you are leaving for this,
ask your new provider to handle it for you – they will be motivated to
switch you as soon as possible.
Sign up online: Many broadband providers offer additional discounts
and incentives if you subscribe online rather than over the phone. Also check cashback websites to see if the deal your signing up for is listed - that way you could make money on your switching!
