Raila OdingaAfter having come close to beating Mwai Kibaki in the December 2007 presidential election, Raila Odinga looks to be favourite to win today’s presidential election. Son of historic opposition leader Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, he joined the opposition to the Daniel arap Moi regime but later rallied to it.
He was educated at Kisumu Union Primary School and Maranda Primary and High School. He later went to Herder Institute University of Leipzig, Technical University, Magdeburg.
His early political career was marked by imprisonment and exile and he fell only just short of election to Kenya’s supreme office in the 2007 election. The result of the election was widely contested and resulted in several months of ethnic violence.
At the start of 2008, he was appointed prime minister at the head of a coalition government. He found a partythe Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in 2005, but in today’s election he is running on the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) with Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka of Wiper and current vice president as his running mate.
Raila is a self-made man where business is concerned. He has set up a number of companies: East African Spectre operates a factory producing gas canisters; Spectre International, which took over a decrepit state-controlled company, runs an ethanol-producing plant and Pan African Petroleum imports oil. With such prosperous companies under their control, Odinga and his wife figure among Kenya’s wealthiest citizens. Today, these businesses have become a family affair, with several members of the Odinga clan involved in running them.
Uhuru Kenyatta
Born in 1961, Mr Kenyatta is the Deputy Prime Minister since 2008. His political party is the National Alliance Party (TNA) but is running on the ticket of Jubilee Coalition with William Samoei Ruto as the running mate.
As the son of Jomo Kenyatta, father of the Kenyan nation and founder of a veritable dynasty, Uhuru Kenyatta has, theoretically, the resources to match his ambitions, thanks to the vast family fortune amassed by his father and managed by his younger brother Muhoho. He was educated at the St Mary’s School in Nairobi. From there he went on to study political science at Amherst College, USA.
Despite having suffered setbacks in the parliamentary and presidential elections of 1997 and 2002, he has little by little established himself as one of the central figures in Kenyan political life. He has been a deputy since 2001, deputy prime minister since 2008 and was minister of finance from 2008 to 2012. And he still hopes to follow in his father’s footsteps. He has been is charged, however, at the International Criminal Court (ICC) together with his running mate, William Ruto for their involvement in the post-electoral violence which broke out in Kenya in late 2007 and early 2008. The charge forced Mr Kenyatta to resign as minister of Finance in January 2012. The trial, which is expected to take place in April 2013, between the two rounds of voting in the presidential elections, could compromise the two’s political ambitions.
